If you check the Links section on this site then that will get you on your way. However, the sites I use are as follows: 1837 BMD - www(.)1837online(.)com Costs a fiver for 55 credits. To view a page of the index (be it birth, marriage or death) costs 1 of your credits. You can also order certificates from the site FreeBMD - freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com. Incomplete but index entries are being added all the time by volunteers. Best bet is try here first rather than go straight to the 1837 site if your search is unsure of the exact year. Like the 1837 site, it supplies you with the Volume and Page Number you need for ordering certificates. Ancestry - www(.)ancestry(.)co(.)uk. You have to take out a membership (I'm on a 3 month one, which I think cost about £30) but I've found it to be a fairly sound investment. The 1891 census is nearly complete (just 4 counties missing when I last looked) and I use this quite a bit in my searching. Also contains parish records. 1901 census - www(.)census(.)pro(.)gov(.)uk. I'd say the majority of people know about this site, it's pay per view and costs a minimum of £5. Scotlands People - www(.)scotlandspeople(.)gov(.)uk. Arguably the best Scottish site around if you have Scottish ancestry. Costs £6 for 30 credits but allows you to view the actual certificates for virtually all post-1855 BMDs. Genuki - www(.)genuki(.)org(.)uk. Has a wealth of information and genealogical goodies - too many to mention here but you gain access to mailing lists and surname lists. Useful site, with tons of useful links and totally free. I'm sure other people know some other really good ones. Regards, Andy Cook

I've just come across a great site holding all sorts of UK archives dating back to 900AD. It's totally free and can bring up all sorts of info, from people being fined for stealing sheep to others being made mayor! It's www.a2a.pro.gov.uk. Other good freebies are the Mormons website (although I don't know how accurate this is) -www.familysearch.org and GENUKI. Good luck!

Which sites do you recommend to use when starting out. I have found the 1891 census on the Familysearch a good start, but any other recommendations would be gratefully received, also which are best value for money. Many thanks Julie
