Help needed to trace GG Grandparents

I've had a look at my reference book, and the only conflict I am aware of at tha time was The First Opium War in China 1839-1842. Just speculation, but he might have been drafted, and then recalled without leaving the country. There are so many possibilities aren't there. Still I dream of finding someone somewhere in my tree who left a mark in history, even the rotten apple! Jim

Jim I don't yet know whether my Greatwotsit (LOL!!) was in the military and don't know how to check as yet. Any advice? Diana It looks like the entry you found on FreeBMD is the same one that April found on the IGI. Very strange that I didn't find it on FreeBMD, I spent ages looking. Maybe I missed it because of the area as I know Ellen was born in Derbyshire. I'm confusing myself now so I'll stop here!! Thanks to everyone, I'll follow up your leads. Lynne Sale

On the freebmd site there is John Cree married Mar 1842 at Portsea Island,7 198, and a matching entry for Eliza King married Mar 1842 at Portsea Island, 7 198. Diana, Vancouver.

If you Greatwotsit was in the Military at that time, it was not uncommon for couples to marry at the point of departure before he set sail to war. I have seen Parish Registers for the Isle of Wight which show clearly that People from as far apart as Wales and Germany were marrying (and from the Girl's names they were obviously from the same homelands - not local girls.) and that was in Napoleonic times, around 1800. It may not be the answer, but it is nevertheless something to bear in mind when looking for stray relatives. All the best, Jim, Gosport.

Beryl Thanks for that, it does say Rotherham on the Birth certificate, but I will check it out. I appreciate your help and that of others who have advised me. Lynne Sale

Lynne, I think there is a Hastings and Rother registration district in Sussex. It may not be Rotherham but I confess I don't know the area. If you look on the Genuki site there is a list of civil registration districts for most counties as set up in 1837. Should tell you where the relevant register offices are now - if I remember rightly. Good luck, Beryl.

April I'll have to check a map, although I do know Rotherham is definitely in Yorkshire - but was it in those days?? Some of the areas seem to be a bit mixed up. All very confusing to me but thanks again for the info, I will try and follow it up. Just need to find Eliza's previous marriage and I'm away!!! LOL! Thanks again. Lynne

April Thanks very much, I hadn't checked that one. Ellen Cree was born in the Registration District of Rotherham, Sub District Brighton, Counties of Herts and Berks. I'm hopeless a Geography, do you think it's around the right area? Sorry to be a pain but I've been looking for this info for ages. Lynne Sale

My GG Grandparents, as stated on my G Grandmother, Ellen Cree's birth certificate (born 1853), are John Cree and Eliza - Late King, Formerly Minty. I have searched FreeBMD and 1881 Census for a marriage but cannot find anything. I have also tried birth's, guessing their ages and using + & - but still cannot find anything. I do know that John was deceased when Ellen married in 1886. Does anyone have any ideas where I can try next please as I've been really stuck with this one for weeks now? Lynne Sale
