thanks for suggestions, the children on the 1901 are all called dowell, am going to try for their birth certs, as for samuel raphael i have found his marriage dates on the freebmd now its been updated now know he married an elizabeth ruth walker but he still does not appear to have been born still will now apply for his marriage cert thanks for your help sandra |

Census returns should only be used as a guide, or as a last resort. If you have a short birth certificate why not apply to PRO at Kew for a full one? Jim, Gosport. |

1. You don't mention what surname the children have been given on the 1901 census, ie Trim or Dowell. People have reasons for changing their name, it's done all the time now so why not then? It may help to consider what surname the siblings were registered under. If they are all Trims at birth, look for Dowell for their mother first but don't rule out Trim. Not all Victorians were prim & proper. 2. Kingsholm is a sub-district of Gloucester registration district. You can get the address from GENUKI. 3. Play with the 1881 census. I've heard that their error rate for transcriptions was about 10%. If true that means that 1 in 10 of your ancestors shown on the 1881 LDS site has been given a name that they themselves wouldn't recognise. Change the spelling around or if necessary try just with first names and a rough year of birth. Remember the information is only as good as the person supplying it, how good are you at reading other peoples handwriting! Good luck & keep trying. |

I have come to a full stop with my great grandmother she is on the 1901 census as annie frances dowell with 3 sons as a widow, yet one of those sons my grandfather birth cert 1890 says father george trim mother annie francia trim nee dowell any ideas where next, I have tried all sorts I know she was born in devon thata all. also my grandmother, frances louisa lewis I have a short birth certifcate saying she was born in kingsholm gloucester in1888 where would i go to get a full certificate so i might find parents. 3rd and last question on my husbands side his grandparents appear on the 1901with his grandfather sameul raphael supposed tohave been born in stepneyin about 1874 but no trace can i find tried the 1881 . sorry to put so many questions i realy am a hooked novice. sandra |
