I commented a couple of days ago on the user unfriendliness of 1837. IMHO it's best to keep it as a last resort and try to narrow down the search field as much as possible from other sources before resorting to it.

I have found the site quite safe, the only trouble I have found is that you can really use up your credits quickly, I put in a surname and it had over 400 pages, I managed to use up nearly 30 credits before I found what I was looking for. I have now gone on either FreeBmd or the census to try and get a near by date, this may be unusal, but I was not happy!

Its safe a lot of people on this site use 1837 and no one has had any security concerns, That message appears whenever you download a programe so that you can verify that you really want to download this its just a failsafe. You are right to be cautious though.

I've been scared off downloading the DjVu viewer for this site as a warning appeared on my screen about its authenticity. I've already paid my fiver! Is it safe to download or not?
