Vicky It might be worth a call to the library in Sheffield. Most libraries have a family history section and will hold copies of the old parish records. You will be able to book to view the records. Some libraries have transcripts of the original records, (done mainly by people interested in local history)which you can look at without making an appointment - this, of course, is of no use to you if you are miles away from Sheffield! Although there may be a kind researcher who will be only to happy to help. Best of luck Jane

Vickie You could try the Sheffield Fire & Police Museum 101-109 West Bar Sheffield S3 8PT. I think they had a display about notorious Sheffielders a couple of years ago and may have some info that could help.

Thanks Ruth, I did have most of the information you gave me but thanks anyway. There is a connection without a doubt, he is the great x3 grandfather of my husband, Jane and william gave birth to Archibald bolsover who then married Emily Mason who gave birth to Stella who was my husbands grandmother(died last year) my sister inlaw has the front page of the paper the day he was hanged, i just wanted to try and trace back a bit further, and hopefully obtain his birth/death certificate. thanks for the info Vicky

Vicky Oddly enough, I had the same rumour in the family when I started researching my family tree about 17 years ago. It turned out to be mere coincidence of surname (my step 3x great grandmother was Mary Peace, born 1838 in Clifton, nr Conisbrough, Yorkshire). However, my father did look into the family tree of Charlie Peace and I still have the notes he took for what they're worth. I'm afraid I have no record of where he got them from: John Peace, born in 1780s, possibly in Burton on Trent, d.1848, married in Rotherham the daughter of a Royal Navy surgeon. She may have died in 1896. They had four children - William, born in 1828?, died young of small pox; Charles (more later); Mary Ann, born 1834, md. 1) Neil, 2) Joe Bethley (common law), d.1857; another daughter born 1832? Charles Peace was born in 1832 in Sheffield - may have lived in Angel Ct, Nusery St, Stanley St, Water Lane. He married Hannah Ward in 1859. I think she may have already had a son, Willie. They had two children - Jane Ann and John Charles. John Charles died young. Charles died in 1879 in London. Hope this helps. Do let us know if you find the connection. Ruth
