Don't forget most of them were illiterate and perhaps they wouldn't have known the difference between step-daughter and daughter-in-law. If they couldn't read they would not know what had been written down for them, which is possibly another reason for the different spellings of names, etc. It's a minefield out there in genealogy land. That's where good detective work comes in, keeping an open mind and never assuming anything - always double check. Vera
