For those who are saying they are new to this: One of the best ways of finding ancestors and advice that I have found is to join mailing lists. This is a good one, but there are also the rootsweb local sites, where there is a lot of local knowledge available. It's not a good idea to join too many at once, as you get loads of emails and it can be confusing to say the least. You can subscribe (it's free!) for a few days or few weeks then Unsubscribe and try a different area. Very useful if you know that many of your ancestors stayed in one spot.
