Nichola - The majority of advice is to stay well clear of Ancestry. Their services are overpriced and the coverage of their records is poor. There are plenty of free resources online and offline to get started with. There are also some pay as you go type services, more resonably priced that are being added to constantly. For example Family History Online and English Origins. Andrea - Yes there are census for the years 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, etc until 1901. However of these only the 1881 and 1901 are available online. The others can be accessed on microfiche/film at a number of places or for specific locations you may find them on CD.
