I use the familysearch.org software. If you go into their site, look for 'downloads' in the options, you can download the programs for free. I use version 5.2, it's Gedcom compatible, so other people can send you their files (even if they use a different software)or you can send your to others, so trees can be linked. It also has lots of room for notes.
