In my case, I have one family who named their girls Emily Vaus Mumford and Ethel Stuart Mumford. Vaus was a surname passed down three generations and Stuart was the child's mother's maiden name. We believe the mother had three sisters - no brothers - so perhaps this was a way of keeping the Stuart surname going.

The only sure way to answer the question is to research the family, checking all marriages etc until you find out. There could be any number of reasons........ My stepmother had the second forename Evans..........not a family name by any stretch of the imagination. It had been given to her by her parents because some old family friend promised to put them in her Will if they named their only daughter after her................. Reg

Possibly conceived - or born - prior to marriage. What was the MMN? Sorry, you don't seem to have that info, if I read your request correctly, I think you need to find that piece of info, as it may well be the answer. Reg

Bore da, Hazel, It's most likely to be mother or grandmother's maiden name - or the surname of the father if she was illegitimate lol! Janice
