According to online dictionary it means 'preparing silk for weaving'. Could not find in in my Oxford dictionary

Probably there are many meanings. Silk fabric or lace, when it came off the machine was not perfectly flat and was often marked with the grease from the machinery. Dressing involved bleaching, starching and pressing, so that the material was 'dressed' for sale. -- Dave.
