Janet, it's the middle of the night here and I have to turn off the computer now :( but if you'd like to post your details I'm sure someone will try to look for you. (Records that early are a bit difficult to find, though.) Most of my ancestors immigrated around that time. One family lived in the States for 10 years. The others either sailed straight to Canada, or sailed to America, then settled in Ontario. (Have only found two sailing records.) Do you have them on any census returns in North America?

This period was a time when there was unrest in the country as agricultural jobs were lost to mechanised threshers etc. In my local Norfolk area agricultural workers were rioting. There were schemes to move people from agricultural areas to industrial ones or to ship them off - usually to the states or Canada. I believe something like 30,000 people were shipped off to Canada in just one year. Have a google to see if you can find anything useful. I believe ancestry*com still has the 3 days free trial with american census info - you may find them on there or on the shipping lists. You can always try the IGI aswell.

I suspect that someone in my family tree might have emigrated between 1841 and 1851. He would have been aged 20 at the most, and came from Devon. Does anyone know where I am likely to find useful lists and what is a likely destination at this time...America? Is it too early for emigration to Australia?
