Claire, If you read the T's and C's for this site it will warn you about details coming up in search engines. You will find the following under ''Privacy Policy'' ''Given the global nature of the World Wide Web, any posting, including but not limited to some or all of the family tree details and/or message board postings you input onto the Genes Reunited Service including any which contain personal information is accessible to be viewed by non-Member internet users around the world who access the relevant information by means of searches conducted through internet search engines and the like.'' This applies to any and all internet sites that you ever access unless by means of secure encrypted connection.

Faith, come over to Family Tree Forum and uploade your gedcom there. You dont get the same tree facility as here but as you say, most of us have our own on our puters. I removed my tree from here after I had someone access my account and change my board name! Ive no one in my tree on here but I am still getting emails with members giving me access to their trees when I have no connection with them whatsoever so obviously GR has not fixed the problem re security. On FTF no one can view your tree info only do a name or village search which has proved really interesting - you find other members with ancestors living cheek to jowel with your own.

I am sorry to hear that other people abuse the info you provide. I would never put anyone on my tree who was born after 1901. I do not think this info is relevant to me. I have noticed that GR is used to find missing living relatives which I do find a bit strange, this doesn't seem the relevant site for this type of personal information.

Someone mentioned Gen Circle the other day and I have put my tree on there. It has come up with loads of hot matches and is a lot more accurate than GR. So if you are looking for an alternative (free) site and are interested in sharing information - I would recommend it.

Thank goodness to read this, I thought I was the only person on Genes who did mind when people only wanted to view your tree. I have worked on Parish Registers and will happily share research but what I had not expect was to find they added my name to their tree (I hope I am living so this should not have happened without my permission). What finally tipped the scales to make me remove my tree was when I found my wifes name added, that has never appeared on Genes. She had done a lot of work on the family history and before I became a full member had corresponded with someone privately on early PR data. A trust grew and stupidly she let this person have a copy of all the family history but did ask that as a lot was recent that this was not passed on. Yes you can guess I now spot the person on Genes with the complete details on their tree right up to births in 1984. I have gradually watched to see how the information is spreading to other trees. No never again will I share information. Yes I have removed my tree.

Samantha, don't be angry at people stealing your info, these are just people who want large numbers on their tree they are not interested in the info behind it. I recently started with GR and have found it very helpful in finding other branches of my tree. My brother has worked on our direct line for years and well before the internet became popular, I wanted to fill in the gaps. I have used other peoples info from GR but have always checked it out before adding to my tree and have been very grateful for anyones help. (thanks Geoffrey W). Now I have become a bit obsessive and you can see me at the weekends wandering around local churchyards with my sister, my hubbie thinks we are both potty! I personally know someone who has over 5,000 names on her tree and all done within a matter of months, she doesn't check the info she finds and only uses the internet. To me that doesn't mean anything but collecting numbers! Don't delete there are some genuine people out there who need your info.

I know just what you are talking about! I have become annoyed at the fact that people, even distant cousins, have copied my research within a day, with not so much as a thank you or offering info in exchange. I has taken a long time and hard work, only for certain individuals to to 'nick' it! One lady not only took details of my direct line, but also demanded my immediate family details.... and she wasn't even a direct relative!!! Sorry for going on but I'm a little frustrated at the moment... I tried to delete my tree, only to find it won't go any further than confirmation of tree deletion. So I contacted Genes and they have assured me that the message has been passed on and they will try to do this for me. I also tried deleting my tree by deleting each individual, only to find the Genes program will not accept it. Therefore, my only choice at the moment is to close all access to contacts, even the good ones, to ensure this doesn't happen again. Luckily, I have another tree program, so if I am contacted, I can choose either to not give any detais or have control over the amount. Has anybody else had this problem?

Hi Faith, I have deleted my tree nearly a year ago, just so that i could upload a gedcom . However i still get hot matches relating to my old tree. When i do not have these certain names in my tree any longer. Julie

I no longer wish to have my tree on GR so how do I delete it please. I have copies but not on the internet as yet. Looking to see where people are putting theirs in light of others accessing my details even though I have 'hide living relatives' Googling my name brings up a comment I made on GR which I wasn't aware could happen. My subscription is up for renewal end of month and I have added my name to the thread about different costs for renewal.
