I put in the forename, birthplace, and approx birth year...........nothing else. Then I trawl the results looking for likely candidates! Trial and error, really........ Reg

That did cross my mind, but where is he in 1851? He is not on the BMD so I assume he is still alive, but I can't find him!

Could be he was the son of one of their daughters and they pretended he was theirs. Rose

Just having been to the Somerset record office, Charles is down as being baptised in Combe Florey as th child of Thomas and Sarah. However, their ages make this very unlikely. Very confusing!

The 3 year old Charles Stoate in Combe Florey on the 41 census has an I beside his name in the last column signifying that he was born in Ireland even though it hasn't been transcribed as such.

The charles stoate on the 1851 census looks to be living with grandparetns as they are in the 50's and 60's- there is a charles stutt on the 1851 census who is the only one registered as born somerset ( i searched years 1833 to 43 to be very sure) Is it poss he lived with grandma then retuned to mum ?

I am trying to trace a Charles Stoate, born abt 1838. He appears on the 1841 census in Combe Florey Somerset, but cannot be found on the 1851 census, neither can he be found in BMD. Any suggestions please?
