VE, What made you choose that Mary Ann E, because there are many others, how did you arrive at that one?

Chris, I had found those birth/christenings with parents John Arnold and Mary. I thought that if they weren't married the mothers name was stated if it wasn't it was okay to assume they were married. Am I wrong to assme this, do you know?

You do know how to throw a spanner in the works don't you Chris. I really hope you're wrong I already have three generations of John and Mary Arnold's and each have children by the same name. My theory was Mary lied abt her age because she was underage to marry and then corrected it on the next census, please god!!!!

Just to throw a spanner in the works... Have you considered if Mary * 51 census died whilst having john then Mary *61 census may be different and young mary aged 3 may be her child . which may explain the 4 year difference in age So you may be looking for 2 Marys Chris

Can anyone help please. I need to know the maiden name of Mary but with so many to choose from how can I narrow it down. The following is what I have: John Arnold born 1826 in Shoreditch married Mary ????? (I think Powell)born Kingston, Surrey. on 1851 Census both John and Mary are aged 24years and have a son Samuel George aged 8months. On 1861 Census John is 34 and Mary is now only 30years, Samuel is 10yrs., John is 6yrs. and Mary 3yrs. By 1871 Census the two youngest children are living with their grandmother although they are registered as her son and daughter. There are so many John Arnolds that married Mary Powells, how do I find out which one is mine to send for the marriage cert. Help please Lin
