You can also buy pictures of ships and their crews from the Imperial War Museum and National Maritime Museum websites

I remember from WDYTYA (series2?), Alison Steadman's prog, they obtained a picture of her Uncle who had been in the Merchant Navy. Men in the Merchant Navy had a 'passport' they carried from ship to ship.....The prog didn't clarify whether the 'passport' had the photo but the central authorization body certainly did. Not a help to you..Sorry.. But might be of interest to those with rellies in the Merchant Navy. Chris

My grandad was a stoker in the Navy, both merchant and Royal. I had a researcher look up his records at Kew and blow me, there was a picture of him, taken for identity purposes when he was in the Merchant Navy.

Unlikely I'm afraid. RN service records can be downloaded - no photos. I have my father's and grandfather's RN records - which almost match the ones you can download and there is no space on them where a photo might be kept. Unlikely that they would have a separate batch of photos anywhere. If you know which ships he was on you can search for those - there are some good RN sites out there - google. I have found pictures of a few of the crew on one of my grandfather's ships (1890's) and one of them might well have been him! That's likely the closest you might come to it. Sorry. Jill

My husbands Grandfather was a stoker in the Navy I have obtained a record from Archive and just wondered if it was usual for them to have a photograph of each service man on file? My mother in law has no pics of him at all. And I know she would be chuffed to bits if I could get hold of one for her any ideas? Many thanks in advance Gayle
