I did think about him emigrating but he would've only been 17 in the 1861 census so I was thinking that he'd probably still be at home. I've got a feeling that he may have died but the death is registered under a misspelling of the surname. I've had a trawl through the Scotland/Wales/Isle of Man census and can't find anything either. Thanks for the ideas.

Have you tried looking in scotland which isnt far away? Or Wales come to that - he may have a job like mining where he could move areas?

I'm having trouble tracing a John Naden b1843 in Sunderland. I have his birth entry and entry in 1851 census where the family are under the surname Nadin but after that he disappears. As far as I know he didn't die and the rest of the family are still in the same area(1861 census shows parents but all kids left home) He could be under a different spelling of Naden but I've tried all variations I can think of and can't find him. Any ideas anyone before I give up on him? Thanks Sam
