sorry but this is a long one!!! I have a Frederick Salisbury who was born Dec 1849 in Prenton, Wirral. On his birth certificate his mother is Jane Salisbury, there is no father on there. The census details over the years change a bit and I can't seem to find what happened to his mother Jane Salisbury. Jane was on the 1841 census living in Woodchurch, Cheshire with James Mealor (b.1811) Ellen Mealor (b.1807) nee Salisbury Mary Mealor (b.1836) James Mealor (b.1838) Jane Salisbury (b.1831) I believe that Ellen Mealor could be Jane's mother who had Jane out of wedlock. Ellen married James in 1835. On the 1851 census in Woodchurch, Cheshire, there is no Jane Salisbury, but there is a Frederick Salisbury . He is said to be the nephew of the Mealor's. On the 1861 census in Prenton, Cheshire there is still no Jane, and Frederick is said to be a Mealor not a Salisbury and is their son! On the 1871 census in Prenton, Cheshire he is still a Mealor and their son. But in 1881 census he is back to a Salisbury living with his wife. Confirmed with marriage cert. My confusion is....where is Jane? I can't see a B,M or D for her. Was she Ellen's daughter? can somebody please help with my confusion. Many thanks Nicola

I can't find a marriage or death for Jane, either...it is a mystery There is an unmarried Jane of the right age in the 1861 census in Lancashire...but how can one know. Anyway...good hunting! Joan

I'm not sure how to follow up on Ann I'm sure you are right in that Fred is either Ellen's grandson or possibly really a nephew...maybe Ellen had sisters... Joan

Ellen's parents were too old to have another child born in 1831, they both died around 1838 aged nearly 60. Ellen did have a child born out of wedlock in 1829 and died in 1830, she was called Alice Salisbury. Which is what makes me think that Jane was actually Ellen's daughter. It's just irritating that I can't seem to prove it. Nicola
