I have a little book entitled - Irregular Border Marriages, Vol ll. It has Irregular Marriages recorded in the Berwick Advertiser and other Border Papers 1808 to 1864. I don't know how complete it is from what was in the papers, but it is quite an interesting list. Kath. x

Marriage in Scotland from Ancestry A regular marriage took place before a church minister following the reading of banns. An irregular marriage came about in one of three ways: by mutual agreement, or by a public promise followed by consummation, or by cohabitation and repute. In all cases, for regular and irregular marriages, both bride and groom had to be free to marry, not within forbidden degrees of kinship and over the age of consent (12 for brides and 14 for grooms).

I have just got an extract from Scotland's people and the marriage between John Robertson and Janet Neilson on 16 December 1804 is stated to be an irregular marriage. Any ideas? Heather
