♥Betty Boo from Dundee♥ Report 18 Aug 2007 01:20

I have searched and searched for my grandmothers birth circa 1880 in Ireland but have never been able to find neither her birth or her parents marriage. I don't know where in Ireland she was born but a family member said she remembers my grandmother telling her she lived in Belfast and came to Scottland with her two sisters when she was just 17 years old. No mention of her parents coming to Scotland with them but I think they must have been alive when my grandmother married in Dundee when she was 23 years old. I just wondered if anyone else has had a problem like this as I have been searching for 2 years now. Betty

Hello, Betty. I've been searching for more years than that ... :-) Do you know her age when she died so can work out the approximate date of her birth?

Hi Marion, Well maybe it has been longer for me searching too, yes I have her marriage, her death details as these were in Scotland. Also asked for a search in Ireland 1 year either side of her birth year to make sure but they still couldn't find her. Betty

Sorry, must go to sleep now, Betty. Just a thought - some LDS Centres have Irish BMDS or they can be ordered in. Happy hunting!

Marion, do you know if the 1911 Scottish census can be viewed in Edinburgh, just wondered if it would have where in Ireland she was born on that. Betty

Hi Betty, I have been searching for my Great Grandfather for ever, He was born 1836, He came to Australia in 1862 and married an Australian lady, I got their marriage and his death cert and there is no info on them at all, no parent's name's, nothing of where he was born, only that he came from County Clare and his age at marriage and death, It's driving me batty, I have no idea if he had sibling's or anything.. So I know how you feel Roz :-)

I don't know that, Betty, sorry. Roz, as he was born before the start of civil registration in Ireland, a birth certificate will not be obtainable. However, at least you know the county so, if I were you, I would subscribe to the rootsweb mailing list of County Clare. I hope that someone will help there.

Maid Marion, Thank you for that I will give it a go, It's a shame he didn't have his parents name on his wedding certificate, Your help is much appreciated.. Roz :-)
