quick question

hi folk, Just a quick question to help settle a point of view, say if someone lived in the country and did not wish to follow family footsteps into thier trade, would they say move 200 miles + to do say an engineering trade, this was 1861 or there abouts. I think that they would other family members say no. Phyllis

Hi Christine, That is what I say, he was youngest son so would not have taken over any way, with his moving away 90% of his family followed him into engineering. Or would there have been a war about that time for rifle makers etc. Phyllis

With small villages and even towns, there was a limit to how many tradesman could be had - so if sons wanted to stay close to their family, they would possibly need to change their trade. But sometimes a son would want to take up a new trade but there was no one in the vicinity to train under - I have ancestors who moved one or more counties away to serve their apprentiship.
