Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956
about Charles Audette
Name: Charles Audette
Arrival Date: Sep 1910
Age: 23
Birth Date: abt 1887
Birth Country: Canada
Gender: Male
Race/Nationality: French

Port of Arrival: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

This is all I can find that has correct year of birth - he is travelling with an Oscar Audette 27. However it says no relatives - he is visiting a brother in law Attleborough Mass and Oscar his mother in same place. Neither can read or write. They could be cousins I suppose.

Dear Grant,

I read Petrina's Chos J Audette as Chas J Audette, but he's b 25/3/1889.

You can look at the original 1901 census images online for free - you'll have to download a MrSid viewer plugin, but no problem there. The problem is they're not transcribed or even indexed in general, although there are some indices and transcriptions available online (incl free ones). However, you might try looking at all the returns for Lachute - about 2100 names on 43 pages. Lachute is in Argenteueil district (in 1901), about one third of the way from Montreal to Ottawa via the minor route on the north bank of the Ottawa R.

You can access the images thru ArchiviaNet:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02012202_e.html
If you're not familiar with Canadian censuses, they're quite interesting. The later ones give full birth dates and say when immigrants arrived in Canada. After you've found them on Schedule 1, you can go to Schedule 2 and see how many arable acres, farm buildings and grain silos they have (well maybe not relevant in Lachute), and where the nearest church/school is, etc.

Regards - Malcolm
