I am doing some work for a friend whos family have been in the same village for nigh on 150 years. The church was having a summer fete yesterday and the church was open for visitors to look at some of the parish registers. My friend was quite sketchy with the info she had so i thought I would go along and check a few things out. I thought the records being available would be photo copies, but no...the church had arranged with the essex RO to loan them back several of the original registers. What an experience.

I looked throught the Banns record book dated 1827-64 and found a very amusing thing......In 1846 on 26th April, 3rd May and 10th May the banns were read for Joseph How, widower and Thirzia Bayley, wife of this parish, widow........................One year exactly later, i found the following entry.....Banns were read during May for George Pudney, batchelor to marry...Thirzia Bayley, wife widow of this parish !!!!!!!

Poor old Joseph was hardly cold before she walked George down the aisle.

I don't think she actually married Joseph, otherwise her name on the second lot of banns would be How.

Hi Kathleen, I must have my Worzzle Gummage daft head on...of course you are right. Maybe Mr. How did pop his clogs before the nuptuals but Thirzia had a new amour waiting in the wings.

Just checked the marriage out and yes George and Thirzia did marry in Maldon in the AMJ quarter of 1847.
