Just checked the image and I see your David is a Chainmaker! That fits in with the occupation on the 1851 census.
If that's the right one then his mother was born in Maybole in Ayrshire - definitely all the more reason to join SFT as we have at least two people who have been researching Ayrshire records (one of them long before computers were thought off!)

According to that they say they're married but that's likely for protocol - unless they married in Scotland before that. If there was a wedding at Gretna it should still be shown.

Anyway, only David that fits the bill is an apprentice chain maker who has a mother called Margaret Geddes. No sign of a father Samuel and no listing on the OPRs for a David son of Samuel - but if the OPRs are generally all Church of Scotland baptisms.
Statutory records in Scotland didn't begin until 1855 so before then it's not so easy.

However, if he was born in Glasgow there is a glimmer of hope! The Mitchel Library has the best collection of records in the whole of Scotland and they still have hundreds of books unopened so records are constantly being found.
I'm from the North of Scotland so not the best to advise you. Maybe one of the Glasgow members might see this or try Scotfamtree.
If you join www.scotfamtree.11.forumer.com there are Glasgow-based researchers who may be able to help. There are Poor law records - it's possible David's mother was widowed or even unwed, if she claimed Parish Relief there will be a record.
