Thanks Andrew. I will write to them and see what crops up although we have no idea where in Cork he was born.

The GRO website in Ireland is below.

http://www.groireland.ie/about_us.htm

I sent for my grandfather's birth and marriage certiifcates a while back. Total cost was €20 (£13.88) at the time. I had name, birth place and approximate year of birth. I got a response by post with the certificates in less than two weeks.

Very impressed. Good luck.

Thanks Jim and Germaine. It's like going through a minefield and being a novice again.

Searching for Ireland is new to me. Please can anyone give me some advice? I have a Cyril John Sanders born around 1905 in Cork (after sending for a UK birth certificate, I was told he was born in Cork!! Grr!)

I have done a Google search and have been unable to come up with a bmd register for Ireland similar to that in the UK. As no-one is sure of his exact year of birth, is there anywhere I can search for one online?

Irish research is a mystery to me but a challenge. Are there census returns online? All I know is that the family were Catholic and he was disowned when he married a Protestant in the UK.

This tree is for a friend in Australia, so I want to get it right.

Regards,

Jackie
