Thank you all for looking. I have tried different spellings of Hatelie but no luck.
My David was definately in the Navy not the Army but I don't know which vessel he sailed on.
Last heard of was the 1901 census. His grandchildren (my mum and her siblings) know nothing about their grandparents. They were all born in Malaya where David and Rhoda's son, David William, went to work as a mining engineer and met and married my granny. She has links with Malaya, Mallacca and Portugal so I'm not even attempting that side!!!
Donald David was David Ws brother and did indeed emigrate to Australia as did their sister, Dorothy Adams, in different years and as adults. I have been in touch with a couple of people about him but they know very little and have different parents for him. I don't know where they got them from. Anyway thank you all once again.

Sadly, it has not been updated lately (which means it's more difficult to contact the person).

Just looked again and at least three people have posted information about Donald David.

Is there a chance the family could have moved to Australia?

PS Several people have posted on Ancestry regarding Donald David.

Have you considered other spellings - perhaps with a Y rather than IE?

Maybe the person that registered hs death spelled it wrongly.

when you you last know for certain he was alive?

My ggrandfather David Hatelie was born in Montreal, Canada about 1864 and somehow ended up in Stoke Damarel, Devon where he married Rhoda Louisa Fowler. He was a Chief Engineer in the RN and the 1901 census has him in The Royal Naval Hospital in East Stonehouse, Devon. Rhoda was born in 1861in Stoke Damarel. I can't find a death for either of them and can only think they may have gone back to Canada though why they would leave their children behind I have no idea. If anyone has access to Canadian records could they please look up his birth and death. I'd love to find out anything about him. Thanks for reading this.
