Sorry for snapping, Sian. It's just that sometimes you spend a lot of time looking for something and then find that the poster has asked the same question on another board and it's already been answered. So it's best just to ask on one board or the other.

I'm really sorry, I am new here. Just learning the ropes and wasn't sure which thread to post on. Thanks to everyone that replied, you've all been very helpful!

I've just added a reply to the Records board. Didn't realize it was on this board too. Wish you wouldn't do that!

Hi
I have just had a quick look on the IGI and there is a John Selkeld b1828 Kendal and a John Selkeld b1828 Preston, so I think they are different people
Do you have his marriage cert?

In the 1871 census John is listed as place of birth Preston, Lancs. Then going back to the 1851 census, I can only find one John Salkeld who has the same YOB and the same occupation "Coach Maker", who is now listed as place of birth, Kendal, Westmorland. I am quite sure it is the same person. I can trace him back as far as age 13 where he is then listed along with many other people of different names as living at Highgate in Kendal. There are no other members of his family listed at this address. I don't know what Highgate is, I am assuming for the moment that it is the poor house, and this maybe a reason for him changing his place of birth when he got married, maybe to hide his background. I am very intrigued and of course, still need to track his siblings and mother and father. Can anyone give me any pointers please, I'm a bit lost now. Thanks in advance.
