Hello
If you were baptised Elizabeth but used the name Betty instead like on census, if you then got married would she have had to use her official name or could she have used betty?

I think apart from when you do so in order to commit some criminal act - that you can call yourself whatever takes your fancy.

my great granmother shows up as Betty on her Marriage certificate and my grandads
Birth certificate

Haven't been able to trace her before the Marriage

Thanks for that but im really struggling with this one i have an Elizabeth Parkinson born 17 feb 1819 and bap 18 mar 1819 in Preston, Lancs parents are James and Jane parkinson
Now i believe, although i havent been able to prove it, that the Betty parkinson on the 41 census is Elizabeth! living with james and jane, unfortunatly the 41 census does not give relationship details.

I'm sure that will be your Betty. Too much of a coincidence don't you think if dob is correct.
