Sarah, there are lots of people on this site who would love to help you. Is everything just muddled up for you? I once had boxes and boxes of bits of paper and every time I looked at them I just felt overwhelmed and couldn´t get going. Then I entered just ME into the tree and I sat there alone for a long time. Then eventually I added my parents, and then I was discovering my family everywhere! It is only now after many many years the bits of paper in the boxes are finally fitting in. We are all itching to help you Sarah, and we won´t send you a bill either!

i agree it is so rewarding when you find out some bit of info all by yourself you just want to tell everyone well i did.when you send off for your first cert and it turns out to be the right person then whoo hoo !! what a buzz and the people on here are the BEST they will help you as much as they can so come on put your details up and let us see what we can help you with. and put that cheque book away.

I dont think it would be any where near as exciting having someone else do this. Sarah, do one thing at a time - what is the most important thing you need to find right now?

I often get "stuck" , to help solve this I move on to someone else. Then come back and I look at it again and often call myself stupid to of missed something that was there right in front of my eyes all the time. I am quite new to this and find these boards so valuable.
Sometimes you'll get abit down when you dont find anything and can be frustrating then when you do its a big rush. I love doing this and impressed myself and a few friends oh how much I have learned.
Keep going there plenty of help out there I would never have got so far with mine without them.

Sarah, what cant you get the hang of? Go step by step backwards and you will get the hang of it. Read up all the tips.

How long have you been doing it and how far have you got?

I once used a professional to do a lookup for me when I hadn't got time and I wanted something particular but that was only a small amount of money.

Otherwise it seems a bit odd to get someone else to do it.

As for "doing" a tree......when is it "done"? How do you decide enough is enough? I can't imagine mine ever being finished because I keep finding new information and as more and more becomes available I can always find more to do.

I suggest you explain to us what you have tried doing and why you think you are stuck. Some of us may be able to sort you out and get you going.

Before you do that I would suggest getting involved with your local family history group. They should be able to help you get to grips with how to do the search.

My sister used a professional for her tree because they were so far flung (roots in africa etc) and had such a common name.

To be honest I would rather do it myself because then you *know* what you've done and how you've reached the conclusions you have, you can take pride in knowing that you have the right people or have taken it as far as you can. Of course, there are plenty of people on here who are all too happy to help.

I wouldn't give up until you'd been working on it for years and got nowhere.

Don't go spending your money on a professional as they use the same info as us on here to trace a family's ancestors.

There are plenty of people on here who can help you with BDM's and census record lookups, including myself.

It will cost you somewhere in the region of £400 - £500 pounds and they usually do a 3 to 6 month project for that.

Where's the fun in that though? Once you get going, its really addictive and very satisfying to do it yourself.

Yes you can pay a professional to do the work for you but the price varies and yes you can look up names on google.

is it possible that you can pay someone to do your family tree if you pass on the information that you already have?and is it possible that you can look up names on google?
