Upperthong Local Board? What is this?

Hi Pat

I live near Huddersfield, in a village just a couple of miles from Upperthong, and it's certainly very hilly being in the foothills of the Penines!

I would say your man was probably a teamer, as this area was very big in the woollen industry, with people spinning and weaving in their own homes, then someone had to collect all the cloth and take it by pack horse to the market. There are still lots of weavers cottages around, with lots of windows to let in enough light for the weaving.

Brook is a very common surname around here, so I wish you good luck with it.

Thank you all so much. I will note that site Maureen - very useful with some of these Census' !!

I have the info you have given Glitter Baby but thank you for your input. I wonder if they were all actually living on a hill - ha ha. Strange address.

Don't worry about it Kath. Ancestry plays up for me on such a regular basis, I would be surprised if it didn't.

You're all stars, as usual

Have had a look now, and I'd say it's definitely Teamer - although i suppose it depends on whether or not the emunerator could spell, so he could have meant Teemer - both of which Glitter Baby has described.

The Urban Sanitary District Local Board will just be similar to the local council of today.

I'd much appreciate a quick look please Kath. Im looking for Jepson Brook on 1881C - RG11/4370 page 6. He was born abt 1880 in Upperthong, Yorkshire.

Thank you Glitter Baby - did you find that on google - I certainly couldn't - thank you so much.

I would guess it is some sort of committee or council that runs the area. Upperthong is a place south of Huddersfield.

Urban Sanitary District is just a level of local government that was used in those days - a bit like we have borough councils now.

What is the name you are looking at and I'll have a look at the census entry?

I've just been looking at a 1881 Census and found a relative on a page which shows "The undermentioned Houses are situate within the boundaries of the Urban Sanitary District of Upperthong Local Board". What does that mean? The "Road, Street,&c.." is given as "Hill"? and does anyone know what a Teamer is?

Thank you all
Pat
