Have tried on 'Trying to find' board a few times to no avail, so thought i'd give this Tips board a go as everyone seems really helpful.
Am trying to find William & Maria Merrifield in 1851 census. The name must be incorrectly transcribed as I have searched high & low & have tried many variations with no joy. William was born abt 1816 - not sure where he originated from.Maria c1817, born Streatham,Surrey. They had a daughter Julia born 1847 in Islington,London. Traced both in 1841,before marriage in 1842.(Merrifield is transcribed as Manfield). Have also traced family minus William from 1861 onwards (a son Edward was born in 1854).Where has William gone? (On M/C his name is recorded as James William-everywhere else just William).Where were family in 1851?
Can anyone please help?

Just a tip............

Trying to find is for locating living people.

For historical info, this board (or Records) is the correct place to ask..........

What was William's occupation?

Hi Reg,
I must admit i didn't know the 'Trying to Find' board was for living people - maybe that's why i didn't have too much success!.
William's occupation is recorded as 'Labourer' on both his M/C & his daughter's B/C - not very helpful i'm afraid. His father is another William & his occupation is 'Soldier'. The marriage took place in Streatham & witnesses are Charlotte Merrifield (not sure what relation she is) & John Bugbud (the bride's father).

I wonder if the census taker heard her name as Maria Mary Field?
There's a Field family with parents William & Maria and children Caroline 7, Julia 5 and Jane 2. William is 30 born Totnes, Devon, Maria 31 born Rotherhithe, Surrey. Caroline also born Rotherhithe, other 2 born Bermondsey.
Do you think there's a chance it's them?

Hi Margaret,
Yes this could possibly be them.I'll have a look myself-may have to get B/C of either Caroline or Jane to verify parents.
Thanks to everyone who has been kind enough to help me.
