gooogle Index of old occupations this will tell you its a very good website to find out what the odd occupations of your ancestors where one of mine was a finsman no idea and sadly the site didnt list it either but i suspect it will for your occupation

I would have though that a wireman was the person who climbed up the poles and connected the lines together, or wired up the connections in the exchange, perhaps?

Does anyone know if in the 1890's a GPO wireman is basically the same as a telegraphist?
