I have just been given the above,
Can someone tell me please how it works.
I usually back my family history up on flobby discs but as I was given this, I would like to know how it works, do I just put it in the space and click back up onto a disc, also a bit thick here but does it rub off what you have on it and backs it all up again

The main difference is that you can not just "save as" to a file on a CD, like you can with a floppy. You have to save your files onto your hard disc first, and burn them onto the CD as a separate operation.

Select the files that you wish to back up and then drag and drop onto the CD drive. Alternatively your CD drive may have come with some copying software, for which you should have instructions.

When you reuse the CD, all of your original files are deleted and replaced. Note this is not the same as overwriting individual files as you are used to with a floppy, the entire CD is overwritten.

Most CDs will only allow you to burn a maximum of 1,000 times, which limits its use for making incremental regular file backups.

Also, if using for backups, check that the burn has worked successfully as it can fail. for this reason it is recommended that two copies are made of important backups.

I didnĀ“t know about the 1,000 times. What happens then does everything just disappear or just nothing happens? Thanks for the warning

Anna,

You should get a warning, and the CD should fail to burn. You then have a chance to copy back the last save you burned before getting rid of the CD.
