WHERE DO I FIND ENGLISH RECORDS????

Dear Experts,

I have had no problems with my Scottish ancestors, but I have a couple of English ancestors to look for and do not know the best resource to search in. The IGI hasn't helped at all.

I am looking for a birth for Susan Robertson, born c.1827 in Norham, England. The family appears to have moved to Scotland where Susan was married in 1846. At the marriage her father is recorded as Daniel Robertson, a brewer in Edinburgh.

At Susan's death in 1894 (in Edinburgh) her father is recorded as John Robertson and her mother as Elizabeth Sanderson. I cannot find any Daniel or John Robertson married to Elizabeth Sanderson in either Scottish or English records. I am confident that I have searches the Scottish records thoroughly but can anyone advise where I can search the English records?

Thanks in advance for any guidance given!

Lynn

Hi Heiwa,

Ancestry.co.uk are offering a free 3 day trial just now and they have all the english records. 'Google' 'ancestry free 3 day trial'.
scroll down to find a 'moneysavingexpert.com' page
click on this and you'll find a link to the trial. No credit card details required!!!!

You'll probably get 4 or 5 days as they are slow to cut you off. You can then re-register for another free trial with another email address.

Good luck

Aww sorry Heiwa

What a shame. Someone asked that question yesterday and she got the 3 day trial so they must have taken it off in the last few hours.

best wishes

HI Heiwa,

Had a quick look on Ancestry and I can't see a birth for a Susan Robertson in England around that time in the Parish records. The BMD start from 1937. Are you sure she wasn't born in Scotland? Have you looked at the 1841 census?

The only place to be sure of finding anything is in the appropriate Parish records.

Your local LDS centre may be able to order the film for you.........providing the Parish has been covered.

The best you can hope for is her baptism, and the record may not even include the mother's name........

HI,

The 1841 Scottish census has a Susan Robertson born Carmichael, Lanarkshire around 1827 with parents John Robertson 60 and Elizabeth age 50? along with siblings William 20 Maurice, 20 and Isabella 15.

The address is listed as Cothouse, Boothouse. Parish 630

Could this be your Susan?

Hi Lynn

The 1861/1881 and 1891 census records all give her dob as 1819 so might be worth widening the search years.

No idea why the two different names but generally the marriage info should be the more reliable as it was given personally whereas the info on the death cert is only as good as the informant's knowledge.

Perhaps the father was Daniel John (or even Donald John as the gaelic for Donald sounds just like Daniel to an English ear.)
