I agree Mumsy. In my case I have found somone on here with 'a whole bunch of twigs off my bough'. We contacted by email, shared verbally our family concerned then swapped certificates and photographs THEN set off looking for more family members. By copying each others tree we could research the findings and fill in the gaps; sharing the cost of certificates. By putting our heads together we progressed well and both seem familiar when we contact.
Prove or disprove the facts.

I know for a fact that some members have errors in their trees. A 2nd cousin had the wrong p.o.b. for our gt grandmother. I sent him a copy of the b. cert so he could see for himself. Unfortunately several other people had copied his tree before he corrected it.
And then there is another line who have a gt grandfathers twin b in 1845, when he was b in 1840. I think they have based her d.o.b. on her age in a census.
So it is definitely best to check out all 'facts' for yourself. Why not print out the other tree if you have the facility, then you can check off all the things in it to be sure it is correct before adding to yours. Genealogists are told to always go to source, e.g. Parish Records, Census films, Certs, rather than rely on what other people tell you or have on the internet.

I'm sorry Titus, I think this sounds a little harsh. Some people may want to download the info not to merge with their own tree but so that they can make reference to it offline and so that they can then do the work themselves to verify the information and eliminate any mistakes. Let's face it, why do we join sites like this one if we don't make use of the leads it may give us to follow up. Not everyone is a name collector.

If you are juust viewing the tree on this site, then there is no other way other than writing the info down and typing it into your tree.

If you have family tree software on your PC, then the other person needs to send you their tree in Gedcom format, you merge it with your tree in whatever software you use and then you can uplod the updated tree back to this site.

It won't duplicate anyone, the software should recognise where two people are the same.

this may seem a really silly question but... when gathering information from other members trees, do i have to write the info down and transfer to my own tree... as i have been doing forever or is there an easier way???

i keep seeing the mention of gedcom but too be honest it scares me a bit....will this not duplicate some people if i have a bit of info and then the imported has more... iykwim??

any advice greatly received...
