hi
Thanks very much for that Joan, i hadnt thought of trying the national archives, will have a look though see what else they have i think william may have died while serving as i have not found a definate trace of him in later census
its sad really as he was the only child of my gggreatgrandmas brother john, his wife died shortly after william was born, and then john died young too.
Thanks again
Sharmala.

Hi Sharm

I couldn't find your William on the National Archives Kew...most of the soldiers discharge records seem to be from a slightly earlier time

Have a look for yourself and see what you think
just put his name in the search and then pick the military options and army on the left hand side

That's disappointing..

You could try the Gordan Highlanders....google them for an address and write and ask them if there are any records from that time.

Good luck
Joan

Or look for your self...just put his name and date of birth and try 75th foot too and see what comes up

He would have been with the Third Depot Battalion of the 75th Regiment of Foot. The following year it was re named 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment of Foot. It's now the Gordon Highlanders. In 1861 I think they should have been at Chatham, Kent - does it say so on the census?

If you look at the section for the regiment on the regiments.org site, it might tell you where they were stationed. His service records - if he was discharged to pension- will be at Kew. If he died in service, there would not be any service records. There may be a museum for the regiment - Google it. You could always contact them for some info, although they won't have actual service records. His Army career can be traced in other, lengthier ways at Kew, if his service records don't survive.

Hello
I have an ancester who in the 1861 census was living in the Third Depot, Battalion Huts Barracks, in Brompton, Gillingham, Kent.
he was a private in the 75th Foot.
Now ive no idea about these things! could anyone tell me more about it please and what war they may have served in?
i also think as ive not found him in later census that he may have died, how would i get his service records?
Many thanks
Sharmala.
