My husband and his brother were born at home in the early 1960s. My father-in-law says that if you had your own home, it was almost compulsory to have the child there. Hospitals were reserved for those with complications and those who did not have a decent home - many of which were immigrants.

I was born at home 1930's. doctors and midwives attended.
Grandmothers also in attendance, fathers left to go to work, or help heat the water.

I was born at home - kids were mostly born at home right up to the late 60s.

If you are lucky, the electoral roll may show who was able to vote in that property at that time. Oh, 1939 - the war years didnt have an electoral roll - check it out though. Local library. If it were a big house, may be it was a home for mothers and babies. Library should have records.

What about being grandparents house ? A lot of first time mums went home to have their babies close to their own mothers.

The birth cretificate states that the parents lived at Canel Side in Ilkeston and her birth parents Thomas Henry Moorley and Fanny Elizabeth Moorley registered her birth then mum was adopted. '

It was very common to be born at home in the UK right up to the last 40 or so years.

My brother was born at home in 1928, I was born at home in 1940.

My brother was married in 1952, their first child was born in a maternity home in Devember 1952, but subsequent children were born at home .......... this apparently was standard policy at that time.

I think you only went into hospital if there was a problem.


Anyway .................. the National Health didn't come in until about 1947, and hospitals cost money!

Who registered the birth and where did they live?

You normally get the place of birth plus address of informant.

If you google smedley avenue, ilkeston it brings up quite a few of the housess up for sale couldn't seen 27 but you could contact the agent for details of other houses. Number 30 is up for sale

It's probably the home address. It was more common to be born at home in those days.

hello my mums birth certificate states she was born at 27 Smedley Avenue in Ilkeston Derbyshire in 1939 does anyone know if this was a hospital or maternety home at that time or was it someones home.doe you know who lived there or anything about that address around that time?very gratefull for any info.janex
