LDS has stuff from after 1837 as well, mainly up to the mid to late 1800's.

If you use that site though, beware as there are 2 types of entry. Transcribed ones have been taken directly from the parish registers and are pretty reliable (although there are still errors) but 'submitted' ones have been sent in by anybody tracing their family history and are not checked before being published, Some of these 'submitted' entries are complete and utter fiction and so you need to treat them with care as many are wildly inaccurate.

I'm finding lately that there are more people volunteering to do look-ups than there are people asking for them.

Will be checking out freeBMD and Ancestry. I did, in my enthusiasm buy some GR credits, so will use them up as practise and then get serious.

Bit thick here, but what is LDS, not come across it.

That's a very good point made by Claire. Many big libraries have the GRO BMD indexes, access to censuses for the local area and free Ancestry access. If you are lucky enough to live near one (like me!) you can get all sorts of info for free.

I use Ancestry, for Census, BMD after 1920 and it cost £80 per year

GR has members who are willing to help by finding information.

Don't - whatever you do - spend money on GR credits.

Read the threads which are aimed at helping 'newbies'..........and ask as many questions as you need to start finding your way around.

Ancestry.co.uk is excellent value for money. If you don't want to commit to an annual subscription just yet, a monthly one costs £10 and will give you access to all available censuses (1841-1901) and other useful records.

FreeBMD is as suggested in the title, free. It only covers upto about 1920 though and coverage is not complete.

Depending what county your relatives come from, some counties have their own BMD sites (for free) such as www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk. Whilst again they are not complete, they are definately worth a try before using credits on another site.

Go to www.ukbmd.org.uk and choose the county you are interested in from the drop down list. It will give you a list of sites related to that county, some free and some not.

Findmypast you need to buy credits but it has all the BMD indexes.

GR credits/searches are a complete rip off and your money is better spent on credit on other sites. The info is the same, it just costs you more to get it!

I'm new to this and whilst reading some of the threads on this site, I've realised that there are lots of people who def know their way around all the genealogy sites.

Could someone please tell me if you have to register and purchase credits for the other sites such as freeBMD, findmypast, or can I find the same information on GR. I have membership and credits on this site, and am wondering if this will give me access to the same info that the other sites have.

Any useful pointers would be gratefully received.
