Hi Brian
Thank you for the reply.
I thought I was doing the right thing by using a CD to copy a back up! If the hard drive failed I at least would then have a file to recover. I see what you mean though. I think the FTM file is in 'my documents' now so will the back up I suppose until I manually copy and save it to a CD if I follow what you suggest.

As I remember FTM defaults to storing the main (FTW) and backup FBK) files in the same place as the FTM programme but I prefer to keep the files which I have (several files for different families) in a folder in the "My Documents" folder. Thus when I back up that folder (once in a blue moon) the FTM files get backed up also.
Where have you told FTM to store the files?
Also - why does it sound like you are backing up onto CD all the time? have you told FTM to put the FTW files in one place and the FBK in a different place. FTM would not like trying to store a file on a CD. You should be doing that manually as a separate exercise.
If all else fails take FTM off your computer and reload it.

I have a valid copy of FTM where I update details on hard drive and also copy to a CD. Every time I finish I keep getting an error message saying that Microsoft has experienced a problem and is closing down etc ....
Then when I check my backed up copies I can't find the one I was working on in the hard drive or CD. What am I doing wrong. I have BT broadband with all the security and firewalls. I have tried using new CD's too.
So frustrating as I spent a long time yesterday putting in GRO ref's to all individuals!!
Please help!!!
