	pseudo means Fake, so the death cert is saying that although the death looked like syphilis the doctor was not convinced but had no other explanation as the symptoms looked like syphilis. In common parlance, the word pseudo is used to mark something as false, fraudulent, or pretending to be something it is not, Roy

	Hi Shelagh, Syphilis was treated with mercury in the 19th century . As you say pseudo syphilis can be caused by vitamin B deficiency, but shows the same symptoms . It may be that the child was given Mercury treatment . Kim

Member Since: February 2006 Posts: 44 Send Message	I've just received a copy of a death certtificate from St. Cath's for a 3 month old baby in 1868. The cause of death was pseudo syphilis. I googled this but did not come up with anything definitive. Some sites link it to actual syphilis, others to a deficiency in Vitamin B. Can anyone throw some light onto this?
