Hello Everyone,
I've got myself a bit confused here. I have been following the line of Samuel Thorley b.1841c (my great great great grandfather) from congleton, cheshire area. He died in 1880 but i have his wife and children on the 1901 census (she is mary ann thorley b.1846) and the 1881 census and his wife is noted as a widow.
Back on the 1871 census Samuel is still alive and married to Mary Ann thorley with two daughters Mary Jane thorley and Annie thorley.
On the 1861 census i have Samuel thorley age 20 living with his sister Eliza thorley. his brother Robert Thorley, their mother Sarah Lemley, his step father charles lemley and his half sister Emma lemley.
So i am guessing that Samuel's father must have died and his mother sarah re-married charles lemley and had a daughter with him.
So i looked on the 1851 census to see if Samuel's father might still be alive. He isn't. On the 1851 census i have Sarah thorley- head and widow, samuel thorley son age 10, elizabeth thorley dau age 8, robert thorley son age 1 month, and thomas Pott -uncle age 70.

I have found a marriage between sarah potts and thomas thorley in prestbury which isnt that far from congleton in 1838 which i thought could be samuel's parents.

Now i'm struggling to find sarah and thomas on the 1841 census. arggggg. can anyone help me?

Well thats where im confused. I suppose thos could mean thomas or be a mistake but i dont have anthony on any of the later census and i cant find anywhere that he died.

Ah right, yeah that could be him! thanks! what is that place?

It must be him. Marton is very close to eaton where they came from.

Here's another confusing thing, on the 1881 census, i have mary ann thorley the head of the family- she is a widow, her children, and then william thorley age 15 - noted as her nephew, and emma coppack age 21- noted as her niece.

I think mary ann was a lancaster before she married and became a thorley. So i just guessed that william was probably her husbands nephew. However, i have found a william lancaster thorley born in congleton in 1866. Im confused. Also confused how emma coppack might be her niece.

If this is Anthony on the census, born in Marton is yours....on further census 's he is married to Emma.

There is a marriage on Cheshire bmd...

A possible birth for Samuel...1840 Dec qtr Macclesfield vol 19 page 94. On the Cheshire bmd the birth was registered in Gawsworth.

I have been unable to find a birth for Anthony but I found this on IGI....extracted from parish records...

There is also a christening for Elizabeth Thorley 24/12/1843 Marton by Congleton. Parents Thomas Thorley and Sarah. Extracted from parish records batch no K130732.

Also on IGI is the marriage of Thomas Thorley to Sarah Potts 21/03/1838 Prestbury, Cheshire. This is only a submitted entry but it gives Thomas's birth b c1815 Marston, Cheshire. I suspect the Marston may mean Marton.

There is an entry on IGI for a Thomas Thorley christening 25/09/1814 Marton on Congleton. Parents David Thorley and Elizabeth. Extracted from parish records batch no J130732.

Again on IGI a possible christening for Sarah Potts 05/12/1815 Marton on Congleton. Parents Edward Potts and Elizabeth. Extracted from parish records batch no K130732.
