If you select Market Drayton from the list of Districts there's only one marriage that fits.

It's not so bad once you get the hang of it! Just click on the event type and district or county (not both) type in the names and date range and hit the 'find' button.

Pauline,

You are not trying to find the freebmd reference on THIS site!

You have to type

www.freebmd.org.uk

into your search engine

(and then put it into your favourites list for you will be using it all the time!!).

It is a free site that is gradually listing all the births marriages and deaths in England and Wales since registration started in September 1837. It is still a work in progress, so there are gaps, but they are currently up to about 1920 to 1925.

Do NOT use this site for accessing any site for which you have to buy extra credits over and above your membership fee ............ it's too expensive!!

The same information can always be found elsewhere for free or cheaper, or you can ask the members on here for help.

You will need to get the birth certificate for at least one of the children to confirm that you have the right parents for them.

The birth certificate will give you the mother's maiden name, father's occupation, address where they live, and where the child was born.

Again, you can get this information on freemd

Here is the registration for Richard's birth

Births Dec 1878 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Allman Richard Newport, Sh. 6a 829

To help you:-

This is exactly what I filled in .......... and it found just the one Richard Allman

To obtain a birth, marriage or death certificate, the easiest way I find is to use GRO (ie, General Records Office), largely because I live overseas and I can order on the web, pay by credit card, I don't have to include a stamped address envelope, and they don't charge any extra for postage!

People are finding that quite a few Registrars Offices are now not supplying copies of certificates for family research.

Go to www.gro.gov.uk (use your search engine, then enter it into your favourites list)

Click on Ordering Certiifcates Online (in the box to the right of the screen), and follow instructions.

Answer YES when asked if you have the GRO Reference Number (that's the two numbers to the right of the name in the freebmd entries, eg. 6a 829 on Richard's birth registration).

Each certificate will cost £7 and takes 4 to 7 days.
