Help needed with East indies birth!

I have an ancestor called Caroline Wale born about 1815 who married a Richard Platts in Leicester in 1834.

On most census' it says under birthplace "East Indies British Subject", on the 1861 census "East Indies Simomalli" and on 1871 census "East Indies, Trmcamale" although it looks to me something like Africa.

Can anybody give me help or advice on what I can do to find her parents/siblings?

Thank you

Trincomalee is a port city on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka, about 110 miles northeast of Kandy. In 1796 the English took power, after the fall of the Kandian Kingdom. In 1815 the entire island came under British rule becoming the first European power to win control over the whole island, known as Ceylon.

Was her father a soldier in the service of the East India Company? Or maybe the Royal Navy? The National Archives holds the following:

Piece details ADM 42/2376
Navy Board and Admiralty: Yard Pay Books Trincomalee Pay Lists
Covering dates 1813 to 1814

Thanks Paul, I have no idea although I think it is probable. As they married in 1834 I can't find out that way.

I will look into the records you have mentioned.

Thanks ever so much!
