I have a few birth certificates from various years from the St Matthew's area of Leicester.

Under where it states the place of birth, it has handwritten: U.D

Does anybody knows what this means? I assume it means something district, but just wondered.

Thanks

Vicky

It's urban district

Due to the subdivision of the Administrative County with the Local Government Act of 1894 (57 &58 Vict, c58), the existing system of sanitary districts was replaced by Urban and Rural Districts, which held increased local government functions, and the Sanitary boards were replaced by District Councils with Councillors. Furthermore, the Local Government Act of 1894 made it "compulsory for parishes with a death rate over 2.34 % to establish a Board of Health" (Gregory 2001) and as Urban Districts were perceived to have greater public health problems than their rural counterparts they received further power and funding. Urban Districts were described as containing small towns, often with rural surroundings, though the rural character of many Urban districts increased with the passing of the Local Government Act of 1929 (Hasluck, 1948). The rural character of Urban Districts was further aided by the County Reviews of the 1930s, when 206 Urban Districts and 236 Rural Districts which were too small, too poor or were irregular were abolished to either merge or amalgamate with wealthier or larger Districts. By 1965 there were 548 Urban Districts in England and Wales (Jackson, 1966, p.11). All Urban Districts were abolished in 1974.

Hi Gwyn, St Saviours isn't very far from where I live.

It is in the Highfields area I think......

If you go onto the nelow link there are a few photos of that area, just put St Saviours into the search bar:

Hope this helps,

Hello Gwyn

Google St Saviours Leicester and the map will come up. Where you see Humberstone Road, move the cursor to view St Matthews Way and St Georges way and the best way I can describe it is that those 2 'ways' encircles one end of the main town!

Thanks Mike! As you are a Leicester lad, would you have any Askews or Lynams in your tree by any chance!
Could you tell me the name of a hospital in the area please as my relatives mother was a nurse, and, perhaps she moved form Birmingham to Leicester to work there.
regards Gwyn

Greeting’s Gwyn O’ Wales.

This depends if the Hospital was a Hospital for General nursing ?
If so then it would be
Leicester General Hospital About 2 miles from St. Saviour’s Hill
Or The Leicester Royal Infirmary ( Oxford Street )
about 4 miles from St. Saviors Hill
The main Nurses training Centre was on London Road

If the Hospital was for Mental patients then it was
The Towers Hospital. Gypsy Lane.
about 3 miles from St. Savior's Hill.

Hope this helps

MIKE. Although born in Leicester my roots lie in Isle of Wright .
