Lol Denis!!! Haven't been to Turkey though!

You're right - Green Hill is in Turkey! I'll need to search the accumulated bumph to see which cemetery this was then. It was the first (of many!!) we visited and just after Albert.

Hi

The official publication 'Soldiers Died in the Great War' records that Thomas Bell, No 380, Scottish Horse KIA 30 November 1915 and that his place of birth was Corstorphine, residence Edinburgh.

Woody's vans get everywhere so probably saw Green Hill Cemetery when zipping through Turkey!

HI Woody, I thought Green Hill Cemetery was in Turkey please dont tell me there are two.
Marriage record says Thomas Wilson Bell son Of Isabella Buchanan and David Bell 27th July Edinburgh private in Seaforth Highlanders.

i also have a certificate in memory David Bell 20054, 2nd Field Coy., Royal Engineers who died age 27 0n 12 march 1915 son of Catherine Ross Bell of 46A Torphichen Street Edinburgh and the late Serjt T Bell (Scottish Horse) who also fell. Le Touret Memorial. This is the one I was looking for because I have seen his name in the books in Edinburgh Castle I didnt know or hadnt remembered that my Gr father also died then. I have also been to the address in Torphichen Street. although I dont know very much about the family. So I know all that to be correct.

There were 11 children and so far the8 i have found all had 2 names. His name on the IGI is Thomas Bell. he had 9 siblings and only 3 have 1 name on the IGI. and 2 of them have wilson as a second name.
Yes they always lived in Edinburgh. Catherine died 1952
I havnt found any marriages yet he had 4 sons 1 died 1901 age 2 and my father was the yougest. william michael lindsay bell b 1904 died 1973 also in the regular army all his life. The eldest son david died 1915 that left thomas b 1893 not looked for his death yet.

Just had a look at some births on Scotsorigins.

10/12/1864 Thomas Bell, b. Corstorphine, Midlothian s/o David Bell and Isabella Buchanan

20/12/1864 Thom,as Bell or McKenzie b. Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian s/o Thomas Bell and Margaret McKenzie

So looks like there are two men called Thomas Bell both born Edinburgh and just 10 days apart in age.

Silver,

On the marriage cert from Scotlandspeople the parents' names are shown - what are they?
Also - you have his date of birth so have you looked at his birth cert? This will also give the names of his parents - and also their marriage details which will take you back yet another generation.

It's unlikely there will be a mistake on the birth and marriage registers - not impossible but unlikely.
WW1 - that's a different story entirely. I think it's very likely that mistakes could be made there. There could also be errors in transcription.

Where is he listed as Thomas Wilson Bell? Is this on a cert or census?
The age at re-enlistment seems very precise - but would make his date of birth 17th Dec 1864.

Did they stay in Scotland? If so, when did his wife die?
When his children married or died is Thomas listed as deceased on the certs?

By the way, we were in France last month and visited Green Hill cemetery. It is a very tranquil place.

My Gr Father Thomas Bell b 10thdec 1864 m to Catherine Ross on the marriage record from \scotlandspeople also says in Seaforth Highlanders at time of m. 1887 Edinburgh
I also have a certificate from cwgc 380. saying T Bell M to Catherine Ross son of David bell and Elizabeth \Buchanan died 30th Nov 1915 and is buried in Green Hill Cemtery
sometimes he is down as Thomas Wilson Bell. and sometimes justThomas Bell--I looked on Ancestry for his service record (forgetting he should not be there ) and found attestation papers for Thomas Bell, no 704 enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders in 1883 for 12 years. He then re- enlisted 2.12.1914 at the age of49yrs and 350days but it has different dates up to 1919 and then a Royal Hospital Chelsea stamp on them. it also says his next of kin is his father Thomas.

Could this be just a coincidence or should i try to find the Thomas branch. I have had a look for a thomas but nothing seems just right.

Any ideas would be appreciated if you have the time.

Silver.
