Hi, I'm having little joy in tracing the history of my Gt Gt Grandfather Joseph Sayce, has anyone any ideas how I can find out any further details? We know from the 1901 census that he was 39 so born c1862 and he died 11/08/1935 he married Mary Brown who was born c1867 and died 26/12/1943 . From the census he was born in Ludlow, Shrops but by 1901 was living at 166 Commonside, Pensnett, B'Hill Staffordshire. Family legend suggests that his father left him in Pensnett when he was a youngster with his sister as the family was so poor then went back to Ludlow to enter the workhouse. We dont know who he was left with and so far cannnot find any details for him from BMD. If anyone has any suggestions as where to try next would be gratefully received!!

Many Thanks

Lisa

can't you get his marriage certificate, that would have his dad's name?

1871 census maybe

Joseph Sayce
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1863
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Richard
Mother's Name: Caroline
Gender: Male
Where born: Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England

Civil Parish: Wolverhampton
Ecclesiastical parish: St George
Town: Wolverhampton
County/Island: Staffordshire
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Disability: View Image

Registration district: Wolverhampton
Sub-registration district: Wolverhampton Eastern
ED, institution, or vessel: 31
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 83
Household Members: Name Age
Alfred Sayce 13
Caroline Sayce 41
Joseph Sayce 8
Peter Sayce 4
Richard Sayce 43
William Sayce 6

I have a ancestor wh was "adopted" by a family when young and took there surname, so maybe sayce isn't his actual real surname, maybe it's his aunties husbands name, but that is just a suggestion.

Hi Daniel

The only trouble is I know that he came from Ludlow and not Wolverhampton!! So I am unsure if this would be the correct person

Many thanks for looking though

This is the right one!! Just can't find previous info for him, can trace Mary Brown easier than I thought!

Lisa Report 10 Sep 2007 16:14

Why oh why can't this be easy? How many variations of a name can there be? I thought Sayce would be easy as it is unusual! Thanks for your help though it has given me a few options of variations that I had not thought of!

Many Many Thanks to you all

Lisa-Glad the info helped -you should really get both certs as each give differing info-It also depends on what other details you have and then cross check with census records to be sure Heather
