I have two queries,

I have a marriage in Scotland in 1878 and I'm a little confused. In the When, where and how married column it gives the address as 18 Burnside Street Glasgow. This isn't suprising as both parties came from Glasgow. However the officiating minister was the minister of the port of Dundee. Any ideas as to why it wasn't the local minister?

My second query is on another marriage from 1878. Why would the bride give her home address as the same location as where the marriage took place. Could this be a mistranscription or could a minister have conducted the ceremony at her home (not some posh house but within gobbing distance of the Gorbals)

No idea about the minister - unless he was providing cover at the local church and would therefore be the local minister.

Marriages very often took place in the home no matter the financial status of the couple. In fact, I reckon at least 50% of marriages in the 1855 - 1900 timescale took place at home, the rest being a mixture of Church and Manse weddings.

Thanks for that. You learn something new every day. Both marriages were after banns according to the rights of the church of Scotland so I just assumed.

Makes me wonder if the Burnside Street was in Glasgow or if the couple went to Dundee perhaps to the grooms mothers for the wedding. I'll have to see where she was living in the 1881 census. I know she left Glasgow when she married her second husband.

I've been doing my tree for 8 years, just goes to show theres always something new to learn. (Not 8 years on the Scots line though.)

If you need Scottish info then the best site is http://scotfamtree.11.forumer.com
It's free to register - place a post on the introduction section and we'll keep an eye until you learn to navigate the site! It's much bigger than this one!!
I know very little about the Glasgow area but there are plenty others to help.

Is it possible the Minister could have been a family member? If so there are separate records available for members of the clergy in Scotland.

Thank you once again Woody.

Sorry I haven't got back to you earlier, the living intervened! I don't recognise the ministers surname but I will have a dig to see if he is linked to the family.

Thanks for the link. I have been on that site before but haven't registered yet. I seem to remember I got myself sidetracked by some info there and went off at a tangent. I think I'll register tonight. (Providing I can find something to amuse OH)

Now I feel a complete a**e. Just looked at a map of Glasgow and spotted Port Dundas Road.Whats the betting there is a church there.

Its in the right area for the Bride and Groom I bet that is what the appalling scan says.
