Martin, where did you find the Wirksworth records on line? I ask cos I don't want Wirksworth but Tidewell, Eyam and similar. I spent a day at Matlock Records office and got nowhere.

Thank you all for your comments, luckily the Wirksworth parish records sites does list many DOB along with baptisms, would be so great if all parish records were online, but that would make it all to easy then it may not be as exciting.

If you are lucky on some baptism records especially those from around 1800 onwards you might come across some where the date of birth has been reordered as well. I have come across some of these in my travels and very helpful they are as well because sometimes there might be a gap between someone being born and christened.

Angela is correct about B standing for Burials hence the ages.

The marriage always gives you the status whether married by Banns or by Licence. If by Licence this is usually shown by a single L. In this case if you are viewing these records at any CRO it is worth checking to see if the CRO has the actual Marriage Licence. I have found a few like this and some of the older ones are gems for giving father of the bride. I have a copy of a 1699 Marriage Licence giving me the name of the father of the bride as well as his finger and palm prints!

The marriage entry will also tell you whether or not the parties are OTP (Of This Parish) and if not OTP then you will usually get the name of the parish they are from. OTP will not necessarily mean that they were baptised in that parish, just that they were living there at the time of the marriage. However many are born in the same parish and you can then check the registers for the baptisms of those who are your ancestors and also look for siblings.

This is one of the main reasons for doing your parish work from the CRO rather than the IGI as you get so much more information.

Although some parish records are online, very few are. If you belong to an FHS they will often have CD's of Parish Records that you can purchase.

I think the B stands for Burial not birth and it's the age at death that is recorded. Parish records don't usually give bith dates, only baptismal dates.

I've been viewing the Wirksworth parish records website and viewing transcriptions of Matlock records here is a copy of a few lines

M 1833sep11 HURSTHOUSE Hannah(Matlock)/BUNTING George Comments: (Banns)
B 1834sep01 HURSTHOUSE Hannah(Masson Side){aged 26}

What i'm trying to understand is the ages listed after the births, why state age 49 or age 26 after the births??

Also following the marriage it comments Banns, does this mean this date is when the Banns were submitted or the actual marriage date???
