Does anyone know a site that lists foreigners applying for and getting British citizenship around the time of World War One. I believe it happened a lot to avoid bigotry over foreign sounding names. |

As far as I am aware there is no online register and naturalisation/denization dfetails can only be found in the National Archives at Kew and some at the FRC Islington. Of course, it is possible that they did not apply in which case they would probably have had an Identity book - unfortunately there is no record of these books which were issued by the local police - the books showed the name of the holder and his family plus details of his/her parents and where they were born. Many families with foreign names (mainly Germanic) often changed their names to ones that were more 'British' not only for the sound but also the spelling. |
