Hi all,
When we look on free bmd at marrige's how come we get 2 men & 1 woman or vice versa, then you don't know which man she married? Thank-you. Jackie.

Hi Jackie,

If there are only 3 names then 1 is missing: the transcription is incomplete. The names are in alphabetical order so you don't know which pairs go together. If the dates are late enough you can look for mother's maiden name for children. Otherwise try to find the couple in the first census after the wedding.

You CAN try to find the 4th name:--

Make a note of date of registration, place of registration, and volume and page number

Return to the Search screen.

Highlight Marriage
Leave all boxes empty EXCEPT for the following

Date Search begins :- quarter and year
Date Search Ends:- same quarter and year
Volume
Page Number

PLUS highlight the place of registration in the list of districts.

Click on Find.

IF you are lucky, you may get the missing information!

First you need to check the image on FreeBMD to make sure the transcription matches. Sometimes it doesn't and they have the wrong page number or volume. Click the pair of glasses next to the entry.

By the way, you don't have to add a reply to bookmark. Just click on "Bookmark This" on the left side of this page.

Freebmd is a truly wonderful resource for us but it is being transcribed by volunteers and hence is not yet any where near complete.

You sometimes need to use the complete index which is now pay to view on ancestry or other sites.Familyrelatives.org also have a useful 1866-1920 period which is fully name searchable and very useful and also pay to view.

Dont forget ancestry offers 14 days free trials and an awful lot of look ups can be done in that time.
